POSTPARTUM BRACELET PROJECT
After a pregnancy, patients may still be at risk for severe health complications. The three leading causes of maternal mortality in Alabama are infection, cardiovascular conditions, and hemorrhage. According to the Alabama Maternal Mortality Review Committee, more than 60% of all pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths from 2018-2019 were preventable.
In June 2024, the ALPQC partnered with seven hospitals to pilot a program providing postpartum patients with bracelets to help healthcare providers recognize potential post-pregnancy health conditions during emergencies. Patients also received education on warning signs of postpartum complications and were encouraged to wear the bracelets for at least six weeks. The pilot received positive feedback from patients, who overwhelmingly stated they would wear the bracelets and that having the bracelet made them feel safer in the event of a medical emergency.
- Keep the card with your ID or insurance card: Put the ALPQC SPEED Pass in your wallet with your ID and insurance card. This way, you can find it easily if you need it.
- Give the card to the nurse: If you go to the Emergency Room or Urgent Care, give the ALPQC SPEED Pass to the nurse with your ID and insurance card. This tells them you were recently pregnant and need special care.
